Rules for Directory Permissions of Apache2 DocumentRoot

  1. drwxr-xr-x should be the permissions for DocumentRoot
  2. drwxr-xr-x should be the permissions for all ancestors of DocumentRoot
  3. The owner of DocumentRoot should be root if it’s /var/www
  4. The owner of DocumentRoot can be sameh if it’s in my home directory.
  5. Apache2’s user (whatever it named) needs to have permission to traverse directories, get listing of directories, and read the files they contain. Even a denying these for an ancestor of the DocumentRoot can prevent this.
