date function

date()(compare with getdate()). When called without an argument it returns a formatted value for the current time. In other words it returns the time in a form other than that of a Unix timestamp. If a Unix timestamp is fed into it as an argument then it will use that time instead of the current time. See documentation. The function strftime() does similar things; however, I hear that date() is better.
